Bio2-DXB -The Pavilion

AADRL

About

Located in the heart of Dubai Design District, Bio2-DXB offers visitors an immersive, interactive design experience and a glimpse into a regenerative, algae-powered future. The pavilion presents a forward-thinking model for sustainable living—one that integrates the cultivation and use of local microalgae directly into the built environment.

At its core, Bio2-DXB promotes an ecology of co-existence between humans and photosynthetic organisms. It raises awareness of the health and environmental benefits of incorporating microalgae into our everyday spaces, demonstrating how living biological systems can actively enhance the environments we inhabit.

Functioning as a large-scale bioreactor, the pavilion serves as a medium for microalgae cultivation. It highlights the remarkable capabilities of microalgae, which account for one-third of global carbon fixation and produce nearly 70% of atmospheric oxygen. Beyond their critical ecological role, microalgae can generate clean renewable biofuels, remediate wastewater, and yield biochemicals, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, bioplastics, and cosmetics.

Designed as a modular system of interconnected panels, the pavilion incorporates an intricate piping network that supports algae growth while fully engaging visitors in the experience. As the microalgae develop over time, the pavilion’s appearance continuously transforms—shifting in color, density, and texture to reflect stages in the algae lifecycle.

Each panel features a bespoke pattern inspired by both Emirati cultural motifs and the microscopic geometry of microalgae. Text inscribed on the panels further reflects the UAE’s cultural identity and the Abwab 2021 theme.

With nearly 80% of the UAE’s energy consumption attributed to the building sector, Bio2-DXB brings attention to the urgent need for regenerative, energy-efficient architecture. The pavilion seeks to bridge the gap between design and biotechnology, promoting microalgae as a local, renewable resource and showcasing its potential to influence the future of the UAE’s built environment.
